Exclusive - The top five tanker PSC deficiencies this year

International Maritime Risk Rating Agency (IMRRA) has ranked the most common tanker deficiencies observed by Port State Control for the first six months of the year.

The leading deficiency has been fire safety – March saw 152 cases. On average 120 cases per month were recorded. March was a particularly active month for port state control. The second most common deficiency on the list – life-saving appliances – saw 133 observations. On average 85 cases per month were recorded.

Paperwork is clearly a perennial problem for the sector. On average 73 cases relating to certification and documentation were identified per month between January and June. PSC alarm bells were clearly ringing when it came to tanker’s emergency systems. Typically, 67 cases were discovered per month for the first six months of the year. Rounding out the top five were labour conditions. On a month-by-month basis there were typically 47 cases.
